Aasne K. AarsandAasne K. Aarsand, Norwegian Porphyria Centre (NAPOS), Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry, Haukeland University, Bergen Norway

Aasne K. Aarsand MD PhD is the Vice Director of the Norwegian Porphyria Centre (NAPOS). She is also a Consultant at the Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry, Haukeland University Hospital and the Norwegian Quality Improvement of Laboratory Examinations (NOKLUS). She received her Ph.D. in porphyria diagnostics from the University of Bergen in 2012 and has broad expertise in all aspects of the porphyria. Her main research interests include the porphyrias, the evidence-based use of diagnostic markers and biological variation. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the European Porphyria Network (EPNET), manager of the European Porphyria Registry and chair of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group on Biological Variation.

Jessica BoydJessica Boyd, Clinical Biochemist, Calgary Laboratory Services

Dr. Jessica Boyd is the co-director of Analytical Toxicology at Calgary Laboratory Services. She received her Ph.D. in Analytical and Environmental Toxicology from the University of Alberta, for which she received a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Governor General’s gold medal. She received her Clinical Biochemistry fellowship training at Calgary Laboratory Services and the University of Calgary, where she was the first fellow through the program.

Dr. Boyd’s research interests include development of new LC-MS/MS assays for toxicology and investigation of dried blood and urine spots as an acceptable specimen type for clinical laboratories. She is the current president of the Alberta Society of Clinical Chemists and the Alberta Society for Toxicology.

As a Vice President, Excelleris Technologies, François is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operation of Excelleris Technologies as well as ensuring high quality service deliveries to customers including the execution of large contracts.
François has many years of experience as Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining LifeLabs, François was Vice President Operations for a payment processing company, iATS Payments where he was responsible for customer service, finance, IT prioritization, HR and other administrative functions. He was also COO for VENDTEK SYSTEMS and held multiple VP positions at Rogers Communications. François holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from Université du Québec (Montréal, QC), and an MBA in Marketing from University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC).

Fida Hindi, Legal Counsel, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario

Fida Hindi is Legal Counsel at the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC). Fida provides the Commissioner with a broad range of legal services with an emphasis on issues relating to the Personal Health Information Protection Act. Fida is a Certified Information Privacy Professional by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Prior to joining the IPC in 2016, Fida worked at an International Bay Street law firm on matters relating to privacy, information management and general civil and commercial litigation.

Marilyn A. HuestisMarilyn A. Huestis, Senior Fellow, Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis & Hemp

Professor Dr. Dr. (h.c.) Marilyn A. Huestis recently retired as a tenured senior investigator and Chief, Chemistry and Drug Metabolism Section, IRP, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, after 23 years of conducting controlled drug administration studies. She also was an Adjunct Professor, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD until 2017. Currently, she is a Senior Fellow at the Institute on Emerging Health Professions, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, on the Steering Committee of The Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis and Hemp, Thomas Jefferson Medical School, Philadelphia, PA, on the Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) Science Advisory Board, Senior Scientific Advisor of NMS Labs, Consultant to the US Department of Transportation, and President of Huestis & Smith Toxicology, LLC. Her research program focused on discovering mechanisms of action of cannabinoid agonists and antagonists, effects of in utero drug exposure, oral fluid testing, driving under the influence of drugs, and the neurobiology and pharmacokinetics of novel psychoactive substances. Professor Huestis’ research also explored new medication targets for cannabis dependence, including oral tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), Sativex, a 1:1 ratio of tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol. She has published 464 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and more than 500 abstracts were presented at national and international meetings. Professor Huestis received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Mount Holyoke College (cum laude), a master’s degree in clinical chemistry from the University of New Mexico (with honors), and a doctoral degree in toxicology from the University of Maryland (with honors). Professor Huestis received a Doctor Honoris Causa from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki in Finland in 2010. Other important awards include National Safety Council’s Borkenstein Award, to be given in February 2018, 2017 Sir Kenneth Standard Distinguished Lecturer for the University of the West Indies, 2016 Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Orator, Melbourne, Australia, 2016 Marian W. Fischman Lectureship Award from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, 2016 Saferstein Memorial Distinguished Lecturer at Northeastern University, 2015 Excellence in Scientific Research, Women Scientist Advisory NIDA Investigator Award, 2015 Norman P. Kubasik AACC Lectureship Award, 2015 Distinguished Fellow from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), 2010 The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT) Alan Curry Award, 2008 American Association for Clinical Chemistry Outstanding Contributions in a Selected Area of Research Award, 2007 International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology (IATDMCT) Irving Sunshine Award, 2005 AAFS Rolla N. Harger Award, and 1992 Irving Sunshine Award for Outstanding Research in Forensic Toxicology. The journal Clinical Chemistry featured her as an “Inspiring Mind”. She currently serves on the Organization of Scientific Area Committee on Toxicology, World Anti-doping Agency’s Prohibited List Committee, Transportation Research Board Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs, and the National Safety Council’s Alcohol, Drugs and Impairment Division Executive Board. Professor Huestis served on the National Commission on Forensic Sciences, and currently is President of Huestis & Smith Toxicology, LLC, Senior Scientific Advisor to NMS Labs, and a consultant to the Department of Transportation, among other organizations. She is past president of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists, past Chair of the Toxicology Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and past president of The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists.

Christopher Naugler, Professor and Head, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Calgary

Dr. Naugler is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He holds cross appointments in the departments of Family Medicine and Community Health Sciences. He completed medical training at Dalhousie University followed by Family medicine training at Western University (CCFP 1999, FCFP 2010), and specialty training in general Pathology at Dalhousie University (FRCPC 2009). A recognized expert in the field of pathology informatics, Dr. Naugler is the author of approximately 140 peer-reviewed publications and holds A CIHR Foundation Scheme grant for his work on laboratory utilization management. He was the winner of the 2013 University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine Watanabe Distinguished Achievement Award for Overall Excellence. His research includes work on laboratory test appropriateness, clinical epidemiology, pathology informatics, and big data approaches to detecting adverse drug reactions from laboratory data.

Marina ReineckeMarina Reinecke, Director, CPD Medicine Program, University of Manitoba

Dr. Marina Reinecke is a family physician who immigrated to Canada from South Africa in 2003. After five years in rural family practice in Manitoba, Marina moved to Winnipeg to pursue a special interest practice in addiction medicine. She successfully completed the International Society of Addiction Medicine’s certification examination in 2014.

Marina’s current clinical practice is with the Addictions Unit at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. She also works for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba as a consultant in the area of safe prescribing of opioids and other drugs with potential of abuse, as well as opioid replacement therapy.

Marina is the Director of the CPD Medicine Program at the University of Manitoba and has been involved in the development and delivery of medical education for many years.

David WeinkaufDavid Weinkauf, Senior Policy and Technology Advisor, Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario

David Weinkauf is Senior Policy and Technology Advisor at the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC), where he works in the Policy Department. He is the principal author of several IPC publications, including the IPC’s Big Data Guidelines, De-identification Guidelines for Structured Data and the Technology Fact Sheet Protecting Against Ransomware. Prior to joining the IPC in 2013, David worked as a Software Engineer at a research centre at the University of Toronto, where he designed and developed software for people with disabilities. He holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from McGill University. David is the recipient of numerous academic awards and scholarships, including a Canada Graduate Scholarship for his doctoral studies. His IPC publication De-identification Guidelines for Structured Data won the 2017 International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners’ Global Privacy and Data Protection Award for excellence in research.
